Standard Operating Procedure

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) Cold Pressing SOP

Cold-press SOP for VCO production. Requires 304 stainless-steel contact parts to resist coconut water corrosion — specify when ordering.

QUICK ANSWER

Haonuo cold-press machines (HN426, ≤ 60 °C) extract 30–40 % oil from fresh grated coconut (wet basis) or 55–60 % from copra, residual oil in cake 6–8 %. A 100 kg batch takes about 2 hours — cold cycles are slow by design, and premium VCO pricing offsets this. Daily throughput ≈ 400 kg fresh (8 hr, single barrel).

Two feedstock paths — same machine

🥥 Fresh coconut

De-shell, pare the brown skin, grate finely. Use within 24 hours. High moisture content (50–55 %) — yield runs 30–40 % on wet weight.

🌴 Copra (dried coconut meat)

Sun-dried or kiln-dried coconut, 5–7 % moisture. Stores for months and yields more per kilogram than fresh — 55–60 % vs 30–40 % (fresh is wet basis).

Cold-press process

  1. 1

    Load 100 kg grated coconut

Spread evenly in tabung press. Cold-press barrel must be 304 SS — coconut water corrodes mild steel in weeks.

  2. 2

    Press at 27–30 MPa, ≤ 60 °C (~ 2 h / batch)

Monitor barrel temp. VCO flavour is sensitive to heat — do not exceed 60 °C. This is the FSSAI definition of cold-pressed for coconut oil. Cold cycles run ~ 2 h per 100 kg batch.

  3. 3

    Filter & bottle

VCO is clear, light-coloured. Filter press gives crystal-clear result. Bottles within 24 hours for best aroma retention.
