Palm Kernel Oil Pressing SOP

Field-tested SOP for PKO extraction on Haonuo high-pressure hydraulic presses (42 MPa). Shell cracking → kernel crushing → hydraulic pressing → filtration.

📌 Palm shell vs palm kernel — know the difference

This SOP is for palm kernel (PKO — palm kernel oil), not palm fruit (CPO — crude palm oil). They are two different products with completely different processes:

🌴 Palm fruit → CPO

The outer fleshy red/orange fruit. Requires sterilization, digestion, screw pressing, and clarification. 20–25 % yield. Most common in Indonesia and Malaysia.

🥥 Palm kernel → PKO

The hard white nut inside the fruit. This page's subject. Requires shell cracking, kernel separation, crushing, and hydraulic pressing. 45–52 % yield. Higher value, used in cosmetics and food.

Shell cracking & kernel separation
Use a palm nut cracker to separate kernels from hard shells. Target kernel purity ≥ 95 % — shells absorb pressure and reduce yield. Moisture 6–8 %.

Kernel crushing
Crush kernels with a seed crusher. Fine grind (3–5 mm) exposes more oil-bearing cells — do not over-grind into powder. Optional: steam 10 min at 90 °C to soften kernels and boost yield by 2–4 %.

High-pressure hydraulic pressing
Load 80–100 kg crushed kernel into the barrel. Press at 42 MPa — palm kernel is a hard seed, standard 27–30 MPa will not release full yield. Cycle time: 40–50 min.

Filtration & settling
PKO is light golden. Use a filter press for bulk clarity. Allow 72 hours settling before bottling for best appearance.
